FCHO Colette 2Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which takes place on 1-7 June. It celebrates the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK.

As regular readers of our blog will know, Emanuel Whittaker staff are renowned for going the extra mile when it comes to helping the residents we work with and so during Volunteers’ Week we were particularly interested to find out what our site staff had been up to.

FCHO ColetteWe are currently carrying out Phase 1 of the kitchen and bathroom renewals in Hollinwood, Chadderton and Failsworth for First Choice Homes and 91 year old Nora Horrocks was understandably apprehensive about the major works planned for her home.

Our Resident Liaison Officer Colette Paterson realised that Nora might struggle to cope with the works and so made it her business to help Nora get through the works with the least possible disruption. First she volunteered to empty out Nora’s kitchen while preparing her home for the works and then helped Nora get back to normal by putting everything back into her new kitchen.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANew apprentice Anthony Heywood recently joined Emanuel Whittaker as part of the commitment to Procure Plus and Salix Homes to provide training and employment opportunities to local residents. Local Salford lad Anthony joined the team at White Friars Court and was approached by resident, Irene Carroll to install her new drop leaf table. Anthony was only too happy to volunteer his services. With a bit of preparation, some skill, the right tools and lots of care and attention, the two of them had the table up in no time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOver at Southgarth, a member of our team spotted that one resident, Jimmy had poor TV reception. Because of ill health, Jimmy can’t get out much and so his TV is really important. Our team volunteered their time and called an aerial specialist to site as a priority job and it wasn’t long before Jimmy had everything remounted and the signal was OK again.

This is just some of the work that our site staff do each and every week across the numerous sites where we are working with social housing providers. It’s become so much a part of our culture, we call it ‘The Whittaker’s Way.’

We really enjoy volunteering our time, skills and resources to help others and we know that across the country volunteers do a great job supporting individuals and businesses. So if you know somebody who helps out in this way, pass on our thanks.
