This week is Adult Learners’ Week – a celebration of lifelong learning.   According to the organisers of the week, ‘adults who continue to learn throughout their lives are healthier, happier and have greater self-confidence and self-esteem. In short, Adult Learners’ Week is the best time to show how adult learning improves and enhances social cohesion, economic vitality and social mobility.’

As regular readers of our blog will know, Emanuel Whittaker has always been committed to training young people through its award winning apprenticeship scheme but we also encourage our older employees to take advantage of learning opportunities where appropriate.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFor example 35 year old Vicky Gee, a Resident Liaison Officer is currently training to acquire an NVQ level 2 in customer service.  “I think adult education is really useful,” she said.  “It’s great to be learning new things and then following up the theory up with the practical.

“Learning really makes me think about what I am doing and I have come across things that I didn’t know.  I am really enjoying it.”  Natalie Price, another Resident Liaison Officer is also doing the same qualification as Vicky.

We currently have eight members of staff who are working through their NVQ level 6 in Site Construction as they progress through the career ladder to become fully qualified site managers.  We also have six members of staff who are studying for NVQs in Site Logistics.

From a business perspective, encouraging employees to learn and train means that we can maximise our staff potential.  It promotes staff development which means better staff morale and a much more motivated workforce.

Its staff that make a great organisation and we are always very proud of our teams who give our business such an enviable reputation.  Adult learning can take various forms from progressing up the relevant NVQ ladder like Vicky and her colleagues, to taking a job related degree or simply taking a first aid qualification.

Learning is not just for children and the young – adult learning is really enjoyable and beneficial.  Here at Emanuel Whittaker, we love learning!
