Community Spirit

Aug 28, 2024

In a heart-warming display of community spirit, Emanuel Whittaker, has gone beyond their usual duties, by creating a child’s custom desk for a resident in need. The idea came about during a routine kitchen replacement project in one of the properties in Beswick.

The social housing team, led by Site Supervisor, Mike Green, noticed the family’s predicament during their visits.

“We were installing new kitchens with top-notch materials, and it struck us that we could do something extra with the leftover materials,” said Mike. “Joe was doing his work at the kitchen table, which wasn’t ideal. We decided to surprise the family with a desk made from the same materials we used for the kitchen.”

The team took it upon themselves to design and build a matching desk for Joe, using the high-quality wood and fittings left over from the kitchen installation. They carefully designed the desk to complement the new kitchen, ensuring it was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

When the team unveiled the desk, the resident was moved to tears. “I can’t believe they did this for us,” she said. “Joe now has a proper place to do his number work. This desk means so much to us and shows how caring and thoughtful our community is.”

“Its small acts of kindness like this that truly make a difference,” Mike reflected. “We’re not just here to build and maintain homes; we’re here to build a supportive and caring relationship.”

As a reminder that even in challenging times, there are always opportunities to lend a helping hand and brighten someone’s day.

7 Miles for No.7

Jul 31, 2024

On Sunday, Emanuel Whittaker donated water and hi-viz vests to the Yeds Supporters Group and Site Manager, Katie Lockwood, was also a first aider on the day, in support of their charity walk to raise funds for MND and in memory of Rob Burrow.

The walk was a 7-mile walk, walking from Boundary Park (Oldham) to Crown Oil Arena (Rochdale), before the Derby Day Fixture.

Raising funds for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal.

A Silent Auction also took place, where a Leeds Rhinos signed 2024 Shirt with Rob Burrow 7 on the back was on offer.

Over 200 people took part to raise money for this well-worthy cause.

Well done Katie and to everybody who took part!

Women in DIY

Jul 29, 2024

Salix Homes asked Emanuel Whittaker Site Manager, Katie Lockwood, and Multi-skilled Apprentice, Toni Kent, to attend a ‘Women in DIY’ event.

Whilst there, they helped the women master new skills and offered advice.

Working in collaboration with The Guinness Partnership, the training was delivered to female residents from both Guinness and Salix.

The training enabled 14 female participants over 18 years old and unemployed or on a low income, the opportunity to learn DIY and home maintenance skills, such as joinery, plumbing, plastering, tiling and more, as well as the chance to gain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

Katie says that she cannot believe that 16 years ago she was in Toni’s shoes!

You have come a long way Katie, you should be very proud!

Joyful Jo

Jul 24, 2024

Last month we reported that, Together Housing asked if we could help out the local, Holy Nativity Church, in Halifax, with some new shelving, as a good will gesture.

After organising a Joiner, the works were complete.

Since the works were complete, the running of the food bank from the Church has been much easier, now that they have lots of extra shelves and storage.

Pictured here is, Church Development Manager, Joanna Beacroft-Mitchell, who also helps at the Church with the food bank and all kinds of other events.

Also pictured is, Emanuel Whittaker Resident Liaison Officer, Kirsty Hall.

Jo was very happy with the completed work and is grateful for the extra shelving that helps the food bank/charity run smoothly.

Problem Solved

Jul 3, 2024

A Salix Homes resident was struggling with his car that wouldn’t start, but Emanuel Whittaker Joiner, Ben Whatley, was ready to provide assistance.

Luckily Ben was able to jump start the resident’s car and get it back on the road.

The resident was very grateful and relieved, as he was finally able to get back on the road.
