From bricks to blankets

Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end

Apprentice bricklayer Katie Lockwood uses her strength, skill and dexterity to build and refurbish properties during the day.  But in her free time, her activities are of a much gentler nature… Katie sews blankets and donates them to Preemies UK.

Preemies.uk is a voluntary group of people, who donate their time and talents to the purpose of making items of clothing and bedding for tiny babies who are born too soon.

Early babies find it very difficult, if not impossible, to maintain their body temperature so they need clothing that fits well, is warm and is designed to allow for wires and the constant monitoring that happens in NICU’s. In a hospital setting there is a high turnover of clothing as it has to be washed at very high temperatures to protect the babies from germs. So clothing doesn’t last very long and supplies have to be constantly renewed. Parents of Babies born too soon or born sleeping don’t need the worry of finding clothing which is where Preemies UK comes in.

Mother of two Katie has created over 40 beautiful blankets and they have been donated to hospitals all over the country.  Katie explained that she does it because some babies don’t have anything, and often their parents are struggling.  In creating the blankets, Katie is putting to good use a dying skill that her Nan taught her.  She can also knit, but finds it quicker to sew the blankets.

Well done Katie.  We’re proud of you on so many levels, and this little act of kindness is an inspiration to us all.
